Floods in China

Greek firefighters recovered the body of a man from a stream in central Greece on Thursday, bringing the country's death toll from floods to four after severe rainstorms turned streets into raging torrents, hurled cars into the sea and washing away roads and bridges. Another six people were missing.

Floods caused by torrential rains hit two provinces that were devastated by last month's earthquake, killing at least five people and increasing the misery for thousands who were left homeless, officials said Wednesday. A number of other people were reported missing.

Life for many in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru was disrupted on Tuesday after two days of torrential rains set off long traffic snarls, widespread power cuts and heavy floods that swept into homes and submerged roads.

Amid heavy torrential rains that have swamped parts of Türkiye and are likely to continue till the end of the week, a man in the southern province of Hatay has lost his life as a retaining wall collapsed on him.

Major flooding has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in southern China, with more rain expected.

The manufacturing hub of Guangdong suspended classes, office work and public transport amid rising waters and the threat of landslides.

In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, almost 500,000 people have seen damage to their homes and their lives uprooted.

The heaviest rainfall in decades has triggered floods and landslides in southern China, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people, state media reported.

Turkey on July 21 extended condolences to Beijing over deadly flooding in central China.

"We are deeply saddened that the floods in the Henan province of the People's Republic of China (PRC) have claimed more than 25 lives and resulted in the evacuation of many people from the area," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Torrential rainstorms caused flash flooding on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing at least six people and leaving nine others missing on Wednesday, authorities said.

China has punished two government officials and is investigating more after reports that a large private lake had been built in south central Hunan province which damaged the environment and caused flooding, state news agency Xinhua has said.
