The United Nations remains committed to helping rival Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots reach an agreement to bridge the island nation's ethnic rift, a senior UN official said Wednesday. The problem has been a source of instability in the east Mediterranean for decades.

Turkish provocations and the Cyprus problem are expected to be at the heart of the contacts during Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades' visit to Athens on Wednesday. 

According to Nicosia, Turkey's behavior is not consistent with a constructive attitude that could allow for a sincere discussion on a solution to the Cyprus problem. 

Greek Cypriots want UN reports on the Cyprus problem to continue ever six months, but sources say the Security Council is leaning towards an annual extension at least for the peacekeeping force mandate following "no meaningful progress" on the issue.

Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, is steadfast in his position regarding a two-state "solution" in Cyprus. As he repeated in his interview with Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, in his opinion the only guarantor of the Turkish Cypriots is Turkey.

If the Greek Cypriots had said "yes" to the Annan plan

“It’s obvious that these military activities are being carried out against the Turkish Cypriot people,” it said in a statement

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on June 13 said any negotiations for the Cyprus dispute need a two-state solution.

She urged both parts of Cyprus to talk about a solution to the longstanding problem

The proclamation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a result of the Greek side's refusal to accept Turkish Cypriots' sovereign equality, the TRNC's president said on Nov. 15.
