Foreign relations of Iraqi Kurdistan

At least three Turkish diplomats including the deputy consul general were shot dead by unknown gunmen as they dined in the restaurant in Erbil, Reuters reports.
Turkish state media confirmed that one of the three killed diplomats is Turkish Deputy Consul-General in Erbil.
Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the shooting of one of the employees from Turkish Consulate.

Turkey's foreign minister attended on June 10 the oath-taking ceremony of Nechirvan Barzani as the new president-elect of Iraq's Kurdish region in Erbil.

A Supreme Political Council was set up in Iraqi Kurdistan to address issues related to the recent independence referendum that angered the central government in Baghdad and neighboring countries. This was announced by DPA and TASS, referring to Kurdish Rudav Portal and Sky News - Arabia.

The Greek Ambassador to Iraq, Dionyssios Kyvetos, recently visited Erbil and announced the Greek Government’s decision to upgrade their office in the Kurdistan Region.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sept. 18 that he had formally demanded the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) region suspend an independence referendum that regional actors and Western powers fear could undermine a campaign against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). 

Iraq's federal government will pay the salaries of the cash-strapped Kurdish region's employees if it halts its independent oil exports, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said late Feb. 15.
