As Libya emerges from years of turmoil and conflict since the 2011 death of Muammar Gaddafi, Turkey prioritizes protecting the sovereignty and unity of independent Libya, the county's foreign minister said on May 3.

Turkey on March 10 welcomed Libya's parliament voiced confidence in the new government formed by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

"We welcome the Government of National Unity, which Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh proposed to the Libyan House of Representatives on March 10, 2021," the Foreign Ministry said in a written statement.

Turkey hopes Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) will be swiftly formed through the confidence vote session to take place on March 8, urging the historic opportunity should not be wasted for the sake of some countries' calculations and ambitions in Libya.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on March 2 met with Jan Kubis, the special U.N. envoy for Libya, in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Çavuşoğlu said on Twitter that they discussed recent developments in the intra-Libyan political process and the formation of a new interim government.

"Our support to ensure stability in brotherly Libya will continue," he added.

Libya's new Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh described Turkey as a "friend and ally," saying his government will work to achieve peace in war-torn Libya.
Dbeibeh's remarks came in an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency, his first interview ever after being elected to lead an interim government.

The United States called on Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday to immediately halt their military interventions in Libya as demanded in a cease-fire agreement, and accept Libyan sovereignty as it moves to unify its government, hold elections and end years of fighting.

Turkey on Jan. 22 welcomed a recent compromise between the warring sides in Libya on a mechanism to appoint a temporary executive authority in the country. 

The Turkish parliament on Dec. 22 approved a motion calling for an extension in troop deployment in Libya for another 18 months.

While the ruling AKP, and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) backed the motion, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), and Good (İYİ) Party voted against it.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the conflict in Libya and the situation in the eastern Mediterranean in a video call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Merkel's spokesman said in a statement on June 16.

Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed Egypt's initiative to mediate for peace in civil-war-torn Libya.

"We welcome Egypt's new initiative to resolve the Libyan Gordian knot," the ministry's sunday announcement says.
