Turkish Cyprus leader to meet UN envoy, promote two-state solution

The president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is expected to highlight a two-state solution during a meeting with the U.N.'s special envoy to Cyprus.

According to Turkish Cypriot presidential sources, Ersin Tatar is expected to meet Jane Holl Lute on Jan. 11 at 14:00 local time.

Turkish Cypriot leader sends letter to UN Secretary

The president of the Turkish Cypriots on Jan. 6 called on the U.N. secretary-general for an open-minded approach to the formula of sovereign equality and two-state cooperation on the island.

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar sent a letter in response to a letter by Antonio Guterres, said the presidency in a statement.

Turkey rejects European Parliament resolution on Cyprus

Turkey on Nov. 27 rejected a "non-binding" resolution by the European Parliament against Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on the Varosha and Cyprus issues.

"We completely reject the non-binding resolution adopted by the MEPs on our country and the TRNC," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy in a statement.

Reopening Varosha to gain ground after virus: Turkish Cypriot PM

The premier of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) announced on June 6 that work on the reopening of Varosha (Maraş) will gain momentum after the coronavirus pandemic is finished.

Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said in a statement there is a pause on the reopening of the abandoned town in the northern part of the divided island of Cyprus because of the deadly outbreak.

Hulusi Akar, flanked by Chief of General Staff Yaşar Güler and top military commanders, arrived at Turkey's border with Syria for a meeting on June 6.
