WWF Romania: With no forestry reform plan in place, PNRR allocations risk being wasted

Allocations via the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for forests and natural protected areas amount to about 1.5 billion euros, but there's a risk that these funds will be wasted with no concrete finality because there is currently no reform plan for forestry in place, WWF Romania said in a statement.

The seriousness of the problem was revealed by the National Forest Inventory, IFN, which calculates the surface of forests and the existing volume of wood they contain.

The first IFN study measured these indicators for 2008 to 2012. The second and latest report, fully released in October 2019, establishes the figures for the period 2013-2018.

Moratorium on Timber Exports in Bulgaria Remains in Place

The existing moratorium on timber exports remains in place until the adoption of a set of amendments to the Forest Act, according to Bulgaria's Deputy Agriculture Minister Georgi Kostov.

The 3-month moratorium, which was introduced by Bulgaria's government so as to pave the way for the adoption of legal amendments targeting illegal logging, expired on Tuesday.
