Authorities across the country remain on alert after 71 wildfires were reported nationwide in the space of just 12 hours on Saturday.

The biggest of the fires, on Crete, forced dozens to flee their homes.

A man was being treated for burns and breathing problems in a hospital in Crete as a wildfire raged out of control in the eastern part o the island on Saturday.

Residents in four villages in Crete have been recommended to evacuate as firefighters battle a large wildfire in a mountainous area northeast of Ierapetra.

Strong northerly winds are fanning the blaze, which broke out near Schinokapsala, in Lasithi regional unit, pushing the fire towards populated areas on the southern coast.

The recent spike in migrant flows to the southern shores of Crete is becoming an increasing source of concern for the government, which expects an intervention from the European Commission.

All of them were rescued by a Coast Guard vessel and transported to Agia Galini

A merchant ship rescued a group of 47 migrants from a distressed boat located 25 nautical miles south of Gavdos, south of Crete, on Thursday.

The merchant ship was coordinating its efforts with the Hellenic Coast Guard through the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC/EKSED).

The migrants were set to be transferred to Crete's Agia Galini village.

A coast guard operation is underway south of the island of Crete Wednesday following the discovery of a sailing vessel carrying dozens of undocumented migrants.

According to reports, the boat is carrying 80 individuals on board. They are expected to be transported to either Kali Limenes in Iraklio or Agia Galini in Rethymno.

The business plan in the concession contract for an area of approximately 400,000 square meters at Kamena Vourla in central Greece, which currently hosts the Galini hotel, provides for the operation of two new hotels and an additional thermal spring.

Greek Water Airports announced on Wednesday it has applied for the creation of a water aerodrome at Agia Galini in the prefecture of Rethymno in southern Crete. 

It also said that the Port Fund of Hania has submitted an application for the creation of a water aerodrome at the port of Kissamos, selecting Greek Water Airports as the contractor.
