Thirty-seven migrants rescued off Gavdos

Greece's Coast Guard said on Thursday it had rescued 37 migrants from a vessel off the southern coast of Crete.

The migrants were found on Wednesday night 18 nautical miles southeast of the small island of Gavdos. They were all collected by a container ship sailing nearby before they were transported by the Coast Guard to the port of Paleochora, near Chania.

The deal rerouting migrant boats from Libya to Greece

Last September, just 30 asylum seekers made the 190-nautical-mile journey from Tobruk in Libya to the Greek island of Gavdos and Crete's southern coast just above it; that number swelled to 397 in December and has passed 1,100 in the first couple of months of 2024. The spike in migrant arrivals from the war-torn North African country is posing a fresh challenge for the Greek authorities.

Dozens more migrants reach a Greek island as smugglers seek new routes

A boat carrying 91 migrants has reached a small island south of Crete that is seeing a spike in the arrival of people attempting the long and dangerous crossing from Africa, Greek authorities said Wednesday.

A coast guard statement said the migrants, who were found on a beach on Gavdos island Tuesday, were being taken to reception areas on Crete.
