More than 9 million foreign tourists have arrived in Antalya by air between Jan. 1 and Aug. 10, bolstering expectations that the popular holiday destination will see more tourists this year than it did in 2019.

Turkish airports saw 18.3 million passengers in August, the country's air travel authority announced on Sept. 7.

"This August, the air passenger traffic, which was smashed by the coronavirus pandemic worldwide, was pretty close to its levels in August 2019 (23 million passengers)," the State Airports Authority General Directorate (DHMI) said in a statement.

The number of air passengers in Turkey in the first seven months of 2021 - including transit passengers - totaled nearly 57.4 million, the country's airport authority announced on Aug. 9.

The figure was around 33.6 million in the same period last year.

According to the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), the number of domestic passengers reached 3.7 million, while 1.6 million passengers took international flights.

Turkey expects to see 123 million air passengers in 2021, jumping 50.7% from last year when the figure fell dramatically due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from the country's airport authority.

The number of passengers through Turkish airports- including transit passengers- reached 81.7 million in 2020, according to the country's airport authority on Jan. 7.
