Srebrenica relatives pleased with Dutch verdict, but not satisfied

Serbia has spent over 800,000 euro so far on the country’s genocide lawsuit against Croatia at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, BIRN can reveal.

Former special policeman Zeljko Ivanovic, who guarded a warehouse where Bosniaks were massacred, was given the maximum sentence of 20 years for assisting the Srebrenica genocide.

Five former Bosnian Serb policemen were given reduced sentences of 20 years each for aiding genocide in Srebrenica following a retrial after their previous convictions were annulled.

A memorial plaque dedicated to the former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, who is on trial for genocide and other crimes in Bosnia, has been erected on the hills above Sarajevo.

Ratko Mladic, the former Serbian Army chief, has appeared in court on Monday to begin his defense on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

The state court ordered the release of former Bosnian Serb special policeman Zeljko Ivanovic, jailed for assisting the Srebrenica genocide, because the wrong criminal code was used at his trial.
