Psomiadis brothers released on 20,000 euro bail
Panayiotis and Dionysis Psomiadis, brothers who served respectively as prefect and deputy prefect of Thessaloniki, were granted conditional release on Monday and ordered to pay 20,000 euros each in bail after pleading not guilty to corruption charges.

Sunday opening pilot scheme extended to Myconos, Santorini

The government has decided to extend the pilot scheme concerning year-round Sunday opening for retail stores to 10 areas around the country, prompting the resignation of the head of the National Confederation of Greek Commerce (ESEE), Vassilis Korkidis, from the commerce department of the larger of the two coalition parties, New Democracy on Monday.
Man, 21, guilty of killing girlfriend
A 21-year-old was handed a life sentence by a Thessaloniki court on Friday after he was found guilty of murdering his 25-year-old girlfriend last year.

One injured after car falls down cliff on Salamina
Four people, including a 12-year-old boy, had a narrow escape on Friday when the car they were traveling in veered off the road on the island of Salamina and fell down a cliff into the sea.
According to the coast guard, which was called to the scene, the driver, 61, and three passengers, 12, 15 and 22, were able to get out of the car on their own.

Building allowed in protected area on Halkidiki coast
Construction will be able to take place on a beach in Katerini, northern Greece, the government decided on Thursday despite the European Commission chiding Athens two years ago over damage to the environment caused by building activity in the area.
Line 4 of Athens metro a step closer as gov’t eyes EU, EIB funding
Hopes that the Athens metro will get a fourth line have been revived after Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis revealed that the government intends to fund the project, which is expected to cost close to 2 billion euros, through European Union structural funds and funding from the European Investment Bank.
Katerini hosts World Beach Wrestling Championships

A spectacular beach at the foot of Olympus the mountain chosen by the Ancient Greek gods at Katerini, will host the 2014 World Beach Wrestling Championships for senior, junior and cadet men and women this weekend, July 4-6. Over 200 wrestlers from at least 20 countries around the world have already confirmed their participation.

University professor beaten in Thessaloniki for 'criticizing left'
Three youths attacked University of Macedonia professor Nikos Marantzidis in Thessaloniki on Tuesday.
Marantzidis, also an author, was with a student at a local cafe when three young men approached him and voiced their objections to the professor writing articles criticizing the left.
European Commission grants tram extension 34 mln euros
The European Commission on Tuesday approved a subsidy of 34 million euros for an ongoing project to extend the Athens tram from central Syntagma Square to the port city of Piraeus.
Firefighters called out to three blazes in and near Peloponnese
Firefighters were tested on Monday as winds and high temperatures fanned three large blazes in Epidaurus and Mani in the Peloponnese, and Corinth, south of Athens.
The Epidaurus fire broke out near the 12th-century Monastery of Agnountos and took 22 firefighters and nine fire engines to be brought under partial control later Monday.
