Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus Launch Joint Initiative For Migrants in the Eastern Mediterranean

Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria have decided to launch a joint initiative for migrants in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Greek Ministry of Citizens Protection announced in a press release. The initiative will be presented to the Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the European Union on 7-8 October in Luxembourg.

 

Greece enveloped in Saharan dust

A ship is barely visible from the Acropolis hill on Wednesday as Athens - and much of the rest of Greece - was blanketed in Saharan dust and sand blown on the wind from Libya. The worst affected areas were in central and western Greece, the Peloponnese and Crete. High dust concentrations are also expected on Thursday and Friday before the weather starts to clear on Saturday.

New prospects for East Med

The "Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act" submitted to the US Congress by Senators Robert Menendez and Marco Rubio that essentially upgrades the geopolitical roles of Greece and Cyprus is seen in Athens as a reflection of Washington's renewed interest and growing involvement in the region. 

State Department: Greece anchor of stability in East Med and Western Balkans

Washington is cultivating Greece as "an anchor of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Balkans," said Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Wess Mitchell, in a speech at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, in which he outlined the Trump administration's strategy in Europe.
