La Palma Volcano:

Lava flowing from an erupting volcano in Spain's Canary Islands has picked up pace on its way to the sea, officials said on Tuesday.

It is now within about 800 metres of the shoreline.

The volcano erupted nine days ago and two lava rivers had formed destroying hundreds of buildings in their paths.

The Minister of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, who is in area, said that together with the mayor and the governor and the whole team of local authorities, they decided to set up tents that will be able to accommodate 2,500 people, in order to serve all the families and all the people who should not enter the their homes tonight.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of at least 5.8 struck the Greek island of Crete on Sept. 27, killing one person and injuring several others while damaging homes and churches and causing rock slides near the country's fourth-largest city.

A strong earthquake of 5.8 on the Richter scale, according to the measurement of the Geodynamic Institute, occurred in Crete.

According to the automatic solution of Geodynamic, the earthquake was centered 23 kilometers west-northwest of Arvi.

The focal depth of the strong vibration was 10 km.

The eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma in Spain could last up to three months, experts said today, the Associated Press reported.

There is no danger of a tsunami

A strong earthquake of 6.7 on the Richter scale was registered off the coast of Nicaragua, world agencies reported.

The depth was 40 km. The epicenter was 80 km southwest of the city of Corinth, which has a population of over 19,000 people.

 A magnitude 5.9 earthquake caused slight damage in suburban Melbourne on Wednesday in an unusually powerful temblor for Australia.

The quake hit about 80 miles northeast of Australia's second-most populous city near the town of Mansfield at a depth of 10 6 miles, Geoscience Australia said.

A rare quake rattled southeastern Australia early on Sept. 22, shaking buildings, knocking down walls and sending panicked Melbourne residents running into the streets.

The shallow tremor hit east of the country's second-largest city just after 9:00am local time (2300 GMT) and was felt hundreds of kilometers (miles) away.

Authorities have evacuated about 5,000 people from villages in the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma as lava spews from an erupting volcano, local officials said.

The 15m high lava flow has already swallowed 20 houses in the village of El Paso and sections of roads, Mayor Sergio Rodriguez told TVE radio station on Monday morning (Sep 20).
