Hungary will push ahead with legislation to put foreign-funded non-governmental organizations under more scrutiny, as those financed by billionaire George Soros operate as a "mafia-like" network, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on June 2.

The European Union is in "existential danger" and must go through a radical reinvention process in order to save itself, George Soros has told an economic forum in Brussels.

Soros said on June 1 that a combination of external and internal threats have brought the 28-member bloc to a "tipping point" between further integration or disintegration.

Thousands of protesters marched through Budapest on May 21 in a demonstration against tough laws targeting foreign-backed NGOs and higher education institutions, amid rising tensions between Budapest and Brussels.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a stinging speech in the European Parliament Wednesday, asserting Hungary’s right to self-governance and defending its actions regarding immigration and against American financial speculator George Soros.

The EU launched legal action against Hungary on Wednesday over a law that could shut a university founded by US billionaire George Soros, the European Commission said, AFP reported.

"We have decided to take legal action on the higher education law by sending a letter of formal notice to the Hungarian government," EU vice president Valdis Dombrovskis told a news conference.

Former British TV sports broadcaster and conspiracy theorist David Icke, who is known for delivering long lectures, will hold a 12-hour lecture in Belgrade's Sava Centar on April 29.

Icke, best known for his theory that a reptilian alien cabal rules the world, praised Serbia for resisting the EU and warned about the alleged power of billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

Conservative watchdog Judicial Watch is suing to obtain records of US government dealings with billionaire George Soros' network of nonprofits in FYROM (Macedonia), which stand accused by the country's government of fomenting regime change.

Companies controlled by Israeli mining magnate Beny Steinmetz sued fellow billionaire George Soros, claiming he cost them at least $10 billion through a defamation campaign that stripped them of rights to an iron ore deposit in Guinea and other business opportunities around the world.

Prominent Turkish cosmetics retailer Tekin Acar has been acquired by France's Sephora, with both companies applying to Turkey's Competition Board for approval of the sale. 

The sale comes months after Tekin Acar boss Tekin Acar told journalists that both the sector and his business were facing difficulties.
