Takeaway ban taken back

After initially announcing a weekend ban on takeaway food in Athens and Thessaloniki early on Saturday, Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis took it back later in the day. 

"The government assessed that the measure of temporary suspension of takeaway will create more confusion and will cause more problems," he said in a statement.

Government reverses decision to open stores as infections spike in Attica

A sudden rise in coronavirus infections in Attica this past week prompted the government to impose stricter measures across the board in the largest region of the country as of Saturday, focused mainly on the market and on delaying the return of grades 10-12 to classrooms.

Retail may start reopening

Government officials agree that any discussions with the advisory committee of health experts on the further reopening of retail commerce cannot take place before early January, indicating a resumption of trade after the expiry of the latest lockdown on January 7.

Discussion on retail stores opening to start in first week of 2021, says Georgiadis

No decision has been reached as yet to extend the lockdown, according to Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis on Wednesday, who noted that the relevant data regarding the opening of retail stores will be discussed in the first week of the new year. 

"If we continue to do well, we will open in areas that infectious disease specialists tell us are free of the virus," he told ANT1 TV.
