German UFO union has called for a strike on the cabin staff of the low-cost airline Germanwings, which is a division of Lufthansa, Handelsblatt newspaper informs, BNR reported. Strike actions will start from 0:00 local time on December 30 and continue until 24:00 on January 1st.

German airline Lufthansa announced plans on Nov. 7 to cut costs at its Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo unit to revive profits but faces a fresh challenge to its efforts with a cabin crew strike.

About 1,300 flights and 180,000 passengers will be affected by the two-day strike, which was formally started by the cabin crew at German Lufthansa. Most of its flights from Germany, including intercontinental flights from Frankfurt and Munich, were canceled, NOVA reported.

Insolvent German airline Air Berlin hopes to complete its sale by September, the group's chief executive said, as government officials fended off accusations of favoring Lufthansa in the bankruptcy process.

"We want to settle the sale in September at the latest, otherwise customers' trust in the airline will vanish," chief executive Thomas Winkelmann told newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

German airline group Lufthansa and pilots' union Cockpit said on March 15 they had struck a new deal to end a years-long battle over pay, pensions and jobs.

Lufthansa and German pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit have agreed to mediated talks to resolve a row over contracts dating back to 2012, averting the threat of further strikes for a few more weeks, the two parties said on Dec. 16.

German heavyweight airline Lufthansa cancelled a further 890 flights on Nov. 30 as pilots remained on strike in a long-running wage dispute.

The strike of pilots working for German carrier Lufthansa will continue on Friday as well. Flights of the company to and from Sofia on Friday have been cancelled, announced Sofia Airport.

A total of 10 flights have been cancelled - 2 to Frankfurt, 3 to Munich and 5 to Sofia.

Lufthansa pilots in Germany began a two-day strike on Nov. 23, grounding hundreds of flights at one of Europe's largest carriers in a bid to increase pressure on management in a long-running pay dispute.

Germany's flagship carrier Lufthansa said it would cancel nearly 900 flights on Nov. 23 because of a strike by pilots, causing travel disruptions for tens of thousands of passengers in the latest escalation of a long-simmering pay dispute.
