Germany's Merkel says relationship with Turkey at a 'very complicated phase'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Aug. 29 that the relationship between Berlin and Ankara was at "a very complicated phase."

Merkel said Germany would like better relations with Turkey but added that Ankara had to take steps regarding fulfillment of the principles of the rule of law.

Economic pressure on Turkey "is working," German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has said, commenting on ongoing tensions between Berlin and Ankara. 

The German Foreign Ministry on July 20 toughened its travel warning on Turkey and warned German companies about investing in the country after human rights activist Peter Steudtner was arrested.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is hopeful that the strains in Turkish-German ties will end once the German general elections are held on Sept. 25.

German police warned lawmakers of possible Turkish spying: Report

German federal police have warned parliamentarians they may have been spied on by Turkish intelligence and may also face potential security risks from Turkish nationalists, Die Welt newspaper reported on June 28.

The report could further strain already frayed ties between Germany and Turkey, which are at loggerheads over a wide range of issues.
