Opposition criticizes ex-Supreme Court president's posting to PM's legal service

Greece's main opposition party, New Democracy, on Tuesday expressed serious concerns over the appointment of recently retired Supreme Court president Vassiliki Thanou to the head of the prime minister's legal department, calling the decision a "dark page for democracy."

Athens mayor in Kassel for documenta14 phase two

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis will attend Saturday's launch of documenta 14 in the German city of Kassel, the traditional home of the art exhibition, where it is to run until September 17.

For the first time in the exhibition's 60-year history, documenta was held outside its traditional home, premiering in Athens on April 8, where it is to continue until July 16.

Athens Mayor nixes neo-Nazi event

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis has emphatically refused to grant permission to extreme-right party Golden Dawn to stage an event at the Chorofylaki park in the suburb of Goudi.

"There is no way that Golden Dawn will be granted the park," Kaminis told a meeting of the city council Thursday.

Athens hires a chief digital officer

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Thursday announced the appointment of a chief digital officer, who will be responsible for upgrading the digital capacity of the city's public services.

"Our aim is to better serve our citizens and the business world with results and transparency," said Kaminis as he introduced Constantinos Hambidis as the man who would fill this new position.

Record arrivals in Athens in 1st 3-month period

The percentage of arrivals in Athens rose by 14% in the first 3-month period, according to data presented in a joint press conference by the city’s Mayor George Kaminis and the vice-President of Aegean Airlines, Eftychios Vasilakis. Athens achieved an all-time record number of arrivals in 2016 with 4,6 million travellers compared to 4.2 million in 2015.
