France slams Turkey-Libya maritime border delineation deal

The agreement on maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea signed between Turkey and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) infringes the interests and the sovereign rights of European Union member states, particularly of Greece and Cyprus, France said on Thursday, adding that the memorandum violates the UN Law of the Sea Convention.

Turkish president, UK premier discuss recent events

Turkey's president and the British prime minister on Jan. 8 discussed top international issues in a phone call, said the Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate on Jan. 8.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke about the current tension between the U.S. and Iran and other regional and international issues, particularly Libya and Syria.

Turkish FM in Algeria for talks

Turkey's top diplomat arrived in Algiers on Jan. 6 for official talks on bilateral relations with Algerian authorities.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu was welcomed by his Algerian counterpart Sabri Boukadoum and Turkish Ambassador Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş.

He is to meet Algerian authorities to discuss bilateral ties and recent regional and international developments.

The foreign ministers of Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy and Egypt are due to meet on Wednesday in Cairo, the Egyptian government announced on Monday.

Talks between the five foreign ministers are expected to focus on developments since the recent maritime borders and defense agreements singed by Ankara and the Tripoli-based government in Libya.

Ankara: Arab League remains silent on Libya crisis

The Arab League remains silent, unable to demonstrate determination in support of the legitimate government in Libya, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Dec. 31.

Turkey has long supported a political settlement in Libya and an end to attacks and the establishment of a complete ceasefire among the warring sides, spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement.

Libya deal ensures Turkey’s maritime freedom, says communications director

A deal between Turkey and Libya guarantees that its maritime freedom of movement is not "undermined", country's communications director said on Dec. 27.

"Our maritime agreement with Libya ensures that Turkey's freedom of movement in the high seas is not undermined," Fahrettin Altun said, adding that the agreement also ensures a strong relationship with the Libyan government.
