Romania's ruling Social Democrat-led coalition on Friday approved a cabinet reshuffle proposed by Prime Minister Mihai Tudose after days of tense negotiations.

Liviu Dragnea faced an unconventional protest on Tuesday afternoon when a group of activists waved handcuffs at him as he arrived at the Supreme Court for a trial in which he is accused of instigating the abuse of office and forgery.

Romania's ruling Social Democrat Party is in turmoil after the country's powerful National Anti-corruption Directorate, the DNA, said it was prosecuting two ministers for influence peddling in a case connected also to the party's leader, Liviu Dragnea.

Romania's two-month-old Social Democrat-led government had its first reshuffle on Tuesday, with the ruling party appointing new defence and economy ministers.

Mihai Fifor, 43, is set to take over the defence portfolio after the resignation of his predecessor, Adrian Tutuianu, who quit two weeks ago over the lack of funds to pay military salaries on time in September.

The ruling Social Democratic Party in Romania intends to organize a referendum this autumn to limit the constitutional definition of the family. This would effectively exclude the possibility of legalizing same-sex marriages, party leader Liviu Dragnea said, quoted by Reuters.

Romania's new government is due to pass a confidence vote in the parliament and be sworn in on Thursday - despite criticism that it includes many ministers from the former cabinet that was impeached for its poor performance last week.

Romania's ruling Social Democrats readied on Monday for consultations with President Klaus Iohannis on naming a new Prime Minister, having impeached their own cabinet last week.

Iohannis stressed that his main concern was the new Prime Minister's integrity, adding that he would not appoint a candidate who had been sentenced for any type of crime, including corruption.
