Provincial official wants EU "to protect Vojvodina"

Provincial Secretary for Local Self-Government in Vojvodina Branislav Bugarski has described "the events in Bela Crkva" as "a scandal."

He also said the provincial government would ask "the international community and the European Union to protect Vojvodina." A coalition led by the Democratic Party (DS) is in power in the province. That party is in opposition at the state level.

Vojvodina calls for changes to Serbian Constitution

NOVI SAD - The Assembly of the Serbian Autonomous Province of Vojvodina adopted on Tuesday, after a three-and-a-half-hour-long debate, a declaration on the need to initiate the procedure to change the Serbian Constitution of adopt a completely new one.

There were 104 assembly members present, of which 64 voted in favour and 33 against. There were no abstentions.

Vojvodina Assembly to consider change of Constitution

NOVI SAD - Branislav Bogaroski, deputy president of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, stated on Monday that the draft declaration on the change of Constitution does not offer ready-made solutions, but rather states the facts the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia has to change and that the current Constitution lacks functionality.

Vojvodina prime minister not considering stepping down

NOVI SAD - Vojvodina Prime Minister Bojan Pajtic has said that he is not considering stepping down from the position.

Pajtic, who is also the Democratic Party (DS) leader, told the Radio Television of Vojvodina on Tuesday that the Vojvodina government has not collapsed and that it is functioning with more capacity and more efficiently than the national government.

Pajtic meets with vice president of China in Beijing

BEIJING - President of the government of the Serbian Province of Vojvodina and leader of the Democratic Party (DS) Bojan Pajtic has met with Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao and discussed with him the most important global issues at the moment - from the Ukrainian conflict to the economic interdependence of China and Europe - which directly concern Serbia, too.

DS: Idea of all-party government - unfeasible

NOVI SAD - The Democratic Party (DS), the leading party in the ruling coalition in Vojvodina, has ruled out the initiative by leader of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians Istvan Pastor for setting up an all-party government in Vojvodina.

Miroslav Vasin, chairman of the DS provincial committee for Vojvodina, is adamant that this idea is not feasible.

NOVI SAD -- SNS vice-president Goran Knežević says his party has changed its stance on joining a coalition government with the DS in Vojvodina, and could now do so.

The change of position on a broad coalition in the province came because the Progressives "have the interest of Vojvodina in mind," he added.
