Helios memorial service held to commemorate victims

A remembrance service was held Wednesday to mark 14 years since an airplane operated by Cypriot airline Helios Airways crashed in the Grammatiko region of Attica, killing the 115 passengers and six crew on board.
The ceremony was attended by politicians, local officials, Cypriot Ambassador to Athens Kyriakos Kenevezos and relatives of the victims.

Tensions building over landfill site at Grammatiko

A showdown is in the offing between Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou and local authorities and residents over the operation of a new landfill near the village of Grammatiko, northeast of the capital.
Dourou appears unwilling to back down, having emphasized during a session of the regional council on Thursday that the project will go ahead.

Probe launched into landfill claims

A prosecutor on Thursday ordered an investigation into whether there are any grounds to claims by residents of the Grammatiko area in the municipality of Marathon, northeastern Attica, that a landfill that has started operating in the area is illegal.

A test run on the new landfill was halted on Tuesday following clashes between police and local residents opposed to its operation.

Two sites picked to take over from capital's landfill at Fyli

Two disused quarries, one in Koropi, eastern Attica, and the other in Megara, western Attica, have been picked for use as sanitary landfills for managing the Greek capital's waste, along with a facility under construction at Grammatiko, also in eastern Attica, Kathimerini has learned.
