Parliament strips imprisoned TİP lawmaker of seat

The parliament has stripped imprisoned Workers' Party of Türkiye (TİP) lawmaker Can Atalay of his parliamentary status, defying a ruling by the top court last September.

The decision by the Court of Appeals to unseat Atalay, who was elected to the parliament in last May's election while in prison, was read in the parliament on Jan. 30.

Defense minister hosts Kosovar counterpart in Ankara

Defense Minister Yaşar Güler welcomed his Kosovar counterpart, Ejup Maqedonci, to the capital Ankara on Jan. 29.

The meeting commenced with the customary playing of national anthems, followed by Maqedonci's salute to the ceremonial unit, highlighting the diplomatic protocol observed during high-level encounters.

Parliament’s foreign affairs committee approves Sweden's NATO bid

The Turkish Parliament's foreign affairs committee on Tuesday gave the green light for Sweden's NATO membership.

Following the approval at the committee on Dec. 26, the protocol will now be submitted to the general assembly for a vote. Simple majority of the 600 lawmakers will suffice for the ratification of the bid.

Felicity Party MP dies after collapsing during parliamentary speech

Hasan Bitmez, a deputy from the Felicity Party (SP), has passed away after collapsing during his speech in the Turkish parliament.

The 22-minute speech on Dec. 12's session, which concluded with the phrase "I greet you all with respect," took a tragic turn when Bitmez collapsed, hitting his head on a marble step behind the lectern.
