Aegean Airlines has secured another slot at London's Heathrow airport and is adding to its schedule a fourth daily flight from Athens to the UK's busiest international hub, it said on Tuesday.

The new flight will operate every day throughout the year except on Saturdays, leaving Athens at 4 p.m. local time and London/Heathrow at 7 p.m. local time.

London's Gatwick airport has said that it had been forced to cancel more than 160 flights between yesterday and Sunday due to an exceptional shortage of controllers, partly caused by coronavirus infections.

Istanbul Airport ranked fifth in the Official Aviation Guide's (OAG) world's busiest airports list for August with a total 3.8 million seats, climbing up from 14th place.

It also moved from the 9th spot to rank 5th in the busiest international airports list by seats.

British Airways will cut around 10,000 short-haul flights from Heathrow between the end of October and March.

The British carrier's move aims to minimize disruption to flights during the winter period. Some journeys to distant destinations will also be affected.

Britain's airports are coming under fire for failing to prepare for this week's jubilee getaway and the busy summer season, as passengers face long delays and cancelled flights.    

"The U.K.'s airports are in crisis because thousands of jobs have been slashed," Sharon Graham, head of the country's biggest trade union Unite, said on June 1.    

London's Heathrow Airport announced yesterday that it narrowed annual losses only slightly in 2021 despite the reopening of global air travel, blaming what it said were stricter passenger curbs in Britain compared to the neighboring EU.

Heathrow recorded pre-tax losses totalling 1.8 billion pounds ($2.4 billion) last year, it said in a statement.

Blue Air will introduce 15 new routes in the 2021 summer schedule that will connect Cluj with key destinations in Europe, according to a company release sent to AGERPRES on Monday.

Blue Air is adding two flights a week, operating seven weekly services during the winter holidays and until the end of March 2021 to meet the growing demand for the route Bucharest Otopeni - London Heathrow, the company announced on Tuesday. According to a press release sent to AGERPRES, ticket prices start at 29.99 euros/segment, with taxes included.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled in the UK because of the expected passage of the Dennis storm today, TASS reported. According to the Press Association, the low-cost airline Easy Jet has canceled 230 flights, which will affect about 40,000 passengers.
