Turkish violations surge in 2019

In an indication of the rising tensions over the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean this year, there has been a significant increase in the number of violations of Greece's national airspace by Turkish fighter jets since the beginning of 2019 and as a result mock dogfights with Greek jets have more than doubled, according to data released on Wednesday by the Hellenic Air Force General Staff (

Turkish fighter jets enter Athens FIR in the Aegean

Four Turkish F-16 and two F-4 fighter jets flying in three formations entered the Athens Flight Informational Region (FIR) on several occasions in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean on Monday.

They were chased off by Greek air force pilots in line with international rules of engagement. Two of the six fighter jets were armed.

Fighter jets to do practice run Monday ahead of March 25 parade

Hellenic Air Force fighter jets and helicopters are to fly over the capital at 11.45 on Monday as a practice run ahead of the traditional military parade on March 25 national holiday.

The annual parade marks the anniversary of Greek independence from Ottoman rule.

The practice run is expected to last just a few minutes.
