The countdown to the Athens Classic Marathon "Athens Marathon, The Authentic" officially kicked off on Thursday with the press conference organized by the Hellenic Track & Field Federation (SEGAS).

Greece's athletics team for this month's European Games in Belarus will fly there in the prime minister's government jet, after sports officials couldn't find seats on commercial flights for them.

Greek Panagiotis Karaiskos won the 8th Athens Half Marathon on Sunday, setting a new record time for the course in the center of the Greek capital, the Hellenic Track and Field Federation (SEGAS) announced.

The 5th Athens Half Marathon kicked off at 9pm on March 20 in the heart of Athens, at Syntagma Square, in front of the Greek Parliament, with more than 18,000 runners taking part.

The Athens Half Marathon event includes three (3) different races with timing services and one (1) more with no timing services for athletes with disabilities and athletes of Special Olympics.

The Athens Marathon, the Authentic Marathon, will be held on Sunday November 8, 2015. A record number of 43,000 athletes will participate in this year’s marathon.

According to race organisers, foreign participants will reach 16,000 recording a 35% increase compared with last year.
