Afghanistan's rapidly-advancing Taliban insurgents entered a western provincial capital, an official said on Aug. 13, hours after they captured the country's second and third largest cities in a lightning advance just weeks before America is set to end its longest war.

Turkey on July 30 condemned an attack that targeted the U.N. compound in Afghanistan.

"We are saddened to receive the news that a police officer lost his life and many injured in an attack against the main compound of the United Nations in the city of Herat in Afghanistan today," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

For the time being, there is no information on the possible casualties, and it is not clear to whom the aircraft belonged and whether it was a commercial flight. Namely, it remained unclear whose aircraft was involved in the crash.

A group of young Afghan women in the deeply conservative western Herat province is breaking traditional barriers as their war-torn country’s first female coders in an overwhelmingly male-dominated tech field.

Turkey has condemned a recent attack on a mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat, which killed at least 20 people and injured 30 others on Aug. 1.

The attack took place in the Bakat Abad area of the relatively peaceful Herat - the country's third largest city. 

To outsiders this was a 2018 World Cup qualifier. To fans of Afghanistan and Syria who watched it live, however, it was much more than a football match.
 
With both countries wracked by war FIFA has barred them from hosting home games, making native supporters hard to come by in a slew of neutral venues and consequently dulled atmospheres.
