Some five kilograms of heroin capsules have been seized in the first ever anti-narcotics operation in the newly-opened Istanbul Airport.

Bulgarian customs officials confiscated more than 288 kilograms (635 pounds) of heroin hidden on a truck from Iran, prosecutors announced Thursday.

The haul was the biggest amount of heroin seized at Bulgaria's borders this year, the customs agency said.

Turkish security forces on April 15 seized some 285.6 kilograms of heroin in the eastern Van province, local police said.

A police narcotics unit in Crete arrested a man on Monday after discovering heroin in his car, a local news website reported.

Greek Parliament on Thursday voted to open supervised drug consumption sites where people can use drugs with sterile injection equipment under the supervision of trained staff.
The legislation, presented by the health ministry, was voted with 229 votes in favour, 32 against and one "present".

Residents in the downtown Athens areas of Kypseli, Pedion tou Areos, Votanikos, Plaka, Exarchia, Kolonaki and other neighborhoods have sent a letter to the government and the municipal authority protesting plans for the creation of areas where habitual drug users will be able to safely inject narcotics under the supervision of trained staff.

A gang that had been distributing large quantities of drugs across Attica has been unraveled after a string of raids around the country on Monday and Tuesday, police said on Wednesday.

A total of 21 people have been arrested -mainly Greek and Albanian nationals.

Istanbul police on Jan. 31 seized some 1,350 kilogram (2,976 pounds) of illegal drugs including heroin and skunk weed in separate operations across the city, governor said.

Some 1.5 tons of heroin that was seized on Jan. 23 in Turkey's eastern province of Erzurum was the largest amount seized in a single anti-drug operation in the country, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has said.

The value of the drug exceeds TRY 21 million, reported NOVA TV.

104 kg of heroin was seized by the Turkish authorities in an attempt to export to Bulgaria via Kapitan Andreevo - Kapikule.

The drug was found under the pod of a tire trailer. The drug was distributed in 130 packets. The driver tried to conceal it from the dogs, sprinkled it with naphthalene and sawdust.
