European companies can ban employees from wearing religious or political symbols including the Islamic headscarf, the EU's top court ruled on March 14 in a landmark case.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) said it does not constitute "direct discrimination" if a firm has an internal rule banning the wearing of "any political, philosophical or religious sign."   

Greek Minister for Tourism Elena Kountoura visited Saudi Arabia as part of Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos’s official visit to the country. Mrs. Kountoura sat at the official dinner hosted King Salman, while she later had contacts with tourism officials to promote Greek tourism.

It is also considering a more general ban on state employees wearing the headscarf and other religious symbols.
The measures are seen as an attempt to counter the rise of the far-right Freedom Party, whose candidate narrowly lost last month’s presidential vote.
The centrist coalition nearly collapsed last week amid crisis negotiations over the government’s future direction.

Morocco has banned the production and sale of burqa full-face Muslim veils, apparently for security reasons, media reports said Tuesday. “We have taken the step of completely banning the import, manufacture and marketing of this garment in all the cities and towns of the kingdom,” the Le360 news site quoted a high-ranking interior ministry official as saying.

The Dutch cabinet has approved a proposal for a partial ban on Islamic veils in public areas such as schools and hospitals as well as on public transportation. This ban will make it the third country in Europe to prohibit the burqa.

Muslim fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan made history, as the models presenting her fashion line on the runway at New York Fashion Week wore the traditional Islamic head cover known as hijab. The 28-year-old designer from Indonesia wrote on her instagram page after the show: ‘Muslims from all over the world and all you, beautiful people, thank you for your support’.

A group of university students have rekindled the heated debate over the acceptance of the Muslim veil in French society as they invited fellow classmates at the prestigious Sciences Po university to try on the garment.

Bulgaria's Patriotic Front proposed to Parliament on Wednesday to ban the wearing in public places of burqas, or head veils hiding the face, citing potential threats to national security.

If approved, the proposed new article in the Penal Code would ban the wearing of any apparel that hides the face of a person entirely or in part.

Iran's president criticized the use of thousands of undercover morality police in Tehran to report on young women who are not wearing a full Islamic hijab or those who play loud music in their cars.
