At least 12 people were killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by a strong earthquake felt across thousands of kilometres, but the region appeared Wednesday to have dodged the mass casualties usually associated with a tremor of such scale.
A Powerful Earthquake Hit Afghanistan
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of northern India today, France Press and Reuters reported.
The epicentre of the earthquake was 51 km southwest of Jurm, northern Afghanistan, at a depth of more than 200 km, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earthquake of 6.1 Magnitude Strikes Afghanistan
An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties, according to Reuters.
The quake, which was also felt in neighboring Pakistan, struck 270 km (167 miles) northeast of Kabul in the Hindu Kush mountains, at a deep 180 km, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said.

Death Toll from South Asia Earthquake Surpases 270 People
The death toll from the powerful earthquake, which hit South Asia on Monday, has reached nearly 300 people.
At least 275 people are known to have died and up to 2000 were injured in the 7.5-magnitude earthquake.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 200 kilometres and was centred in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, hitting northern Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India.
Four killed in Pakistan after Afghanistan quake
At least four people were killed and scores injured on Oct. 26 in northeastern Pakistan when a strong earthquake hit neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistani health officials and police said.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck northeastern Afghanistan, the U.S. Geological Survey said, sending tremors that were felt in India and Pakistan.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake hits Hindu Kush, Afghanistan
A major earthquake was felt in the northern part of Pakistan. It was also felt in Afghanistan, and as far away as New Delhi, India.
Office workers poured onto the streets as the sustained shaking rattled their buildings.
