Nearly 50 million vinyl albums were sold in the US during 2023, an increase of 14.2% on the previous year

A genre, a culture and a lifestyle all at once: Hip hop has traveled from the block party to the billionaire's club, sound tracked protest and celebration, and asserted seismic influence over the course of pop.

Laser beams illuminate a darkened restaurant turned dance hall in Cairo as revelers move to thumping beats from female DJs - part of a generation of women shaking up Egypt's underground electronic music scene.

"All my life, I've seen men behind the decks," said party-goer Menna Shanab, 26, as psychedelic visuals reflected off the waters at the Nile-side venue.

Michelle Rasul had just learned to read and write and was already spinning turntables, scratching hip-hop records and making the beats drop. Four years later, at the age of 9, she's one of the world's top DJs and competed in this year's global championship.

Local DJ, producer and musician RSN and his Electric Quartet will appear on stage at Faust bar in downtown Athens on Friday, January 17, where they will be performing numbers from his 2018 album "Strange Eyes" as well as earlier works. RSN's music is influenced by hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk and trip-hop.

The Homcore music store celebrates global Record Store Day, which is aimed at promoting the culture of the independently owned record store, with a special sale of used vinyl albums brought in for the occasion and DJ sets. Doors open at 11 a.m. and close at 10.30 p.m., and admission is free.
