The parents of an infant that was crushed to death when a television set fell on it on Saturday at their home in a Roma settlement on Rhodes faced a prosecutor on the Dodecanesian island on Monday on charges of causing manslaughter through neglect.

A 38-day-old baby in the eastern province of Van has died after being sexually and physically abused, while the mother and two men were arrested over the incident on Jan. 30. 

The baby was taken to hospital in Van's İpekyolu district on Jan. 26 by the mother and the two men.

Some 28 women were killed in Turkey in the past month alone, the volunteer watchdog organization "We Will Stop Femicide Platform" revealed on its website on Dec. 6.

At least 1,134 women have been murdered in Turkey in the past five years, according to a website that keep tracks of femicides. 

The "kadincinayetleri.org" website counts the femicides that have been covered by the media between 2010 and 2015. 

The statistics were released in order to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Nov. 25.

A total of 35 women were killed in October and 21 others were subjected to sexual violence, according to a report released by the Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız Platformu, a women's rights activist organization that keeps track of violence against women.

An Athens court on Tuesday found four defendants guilty in connection to the murder of 4-year-old daughter Ani Borisova in central Athens on Good Friday last year.
