20 Years Since Princess Diana's Death

Tributes have been left at the gates of Kensington Palace, where thousands came to mourn the death of Princess Diana 20 years ago, Sky News writes. 

On the 31 August 1997 it was announced that Diana, Princess of Wales had died after a car she was travelling in crashed in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. She was just 36 years old.

A controversial Channel 4 documentary featuring intimate tapes of Princess Diana talking about her doomed marriage to Charles has been slammed as “lowest common denominator TV.”

The documentary Diana: In Her Own Words features the royal speaking candidly and informally about her upbringing, her courtship with the Prince of Wales, her troubled marriage and her public life.

It was a typical phone call between two boys and their mother, who was on vacation in France. It was brief - the boys wanted to get back to playing with their cousins, not spend time on the phone chatting.

The brevity of that 1997 call haunts Prince William and Prince Harry to this day - for their mother, Princess Diana, would die in a car crash that night.

Buckingham Palace: Prince Philip will no longer carry out public engagements from September

The news was announced at an “emergency meeting” with all senior staff and aides at the palace this morning.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen.
