Police seek armed pair that held up Athens post office branch

Two armed men held up a post office branch at gunpoint in the Athens suburb of Kaisariani on Friday and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

According to police, the two gunmen threatened staff and customers at the post office at around 9.30 a.m. before taking the money and making their getaway on a motorcycle, which was later found in the suburb of Zografou.

Toy store hit by vandals

Police were searching for the suspects who vandalized a toy store in the northern Athens suburb of Maroussi.
The incident took place shortly after 2 a.m. when unknown assailants splashed paint and smashed the front glass window of the store as they scattered fliers.
Police found a sledgehammer at the scene.
The motive behind the destruction was not clear.

Turkish-US inmate on death row

A court in Florida has denied the second appeal of a Turkish-American inmate, Cengiz Koçaker, who was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of a taxi driver and sentenced to death penalty.

If the governor of the state approves the sentence, Koçaker will be executed by lethal injection.

Police officer accused of armed robberies remanded

A police officer who was arrested last week on charges of committing at least 11 robberies was remanded in custody on Monday after appearing before a prosecutor and investigative magistrate.

The 29-year-old suspect is accused of robbing eight gas stations and kiosks in the Athens areas of Agia Paraskevi, Halandri and Ilioupoli since November last year.
