Over two dozen unexploded artillery shells that were discovered on Istanbul's Şile coast have been disposed of, according to the Defense Ministry, which declared that the shells might be dating back to World War II.

Istanbul has recorded the highest temperatures in 23 years, with 44.1 degrees on July 26, as the firefighting crews continue to battle massive wildfires in several parts of the country, including a four-day-long one in the southern province of Antalya's Kemer district.

With the approaching of the summer season, many people have started their search to plan a vacation according to their budget, particularly some spots in Istanbul accessible by public transportation, such as Adalar, Kilyos and Şile, are making their final preparations for their customers.

Some 43 people, including five foreigners, drowned in seas, lakes and dams in 22 provinces amid the long Eid al-Adha holiday.

According to data obtained by the state-run Anadolu Agency, 16 of those who died were children.

Istanbul and the Black Sea province of Amasya are two provinces with the highest cases, with five deaths each.

Public beaches run by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will begin serving this summer on June 4.

A large-scale operation with the participation of 2,000 police officers from anti-narcotics and anti-terror teams was launched in Istanbul on the morning of March 23. 

Checkpoints were established in parts of the city for the operation, called "Kurtkapanı-2," which means Wolf Creek in Turkish. 

A fire that broke out in the roof of a poultry farm during repair work has killed 21,000 chickens in the Kandıra district of Turkey's northwestern province of Kocaeli, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Fire broke out on Sept. 30 after a welder's spark touched isolation materials during construction and repair work in the roof of the poultry farm belonging to Nihat Ayvazoğlu.

One worker was killed while four others were wounded when a fire erupted at Turkey's largest oil refinery, Tüpra?, in the northwestern province of Kocaeli.
