Asylum decision for Turkish officer will have 'negative impacts,' warns Ankara

A decision by Greece's asylum appeals committee to grant protection to one of eight Turkish officers accused by Ankara of participating in the botched coup of 2016, will have "negative impacts on bilateral relations," Turkey's Foreign Ministry was quoted by Daily Sabah as saying.

Turkish coast guard in dramatic rescue of stranded migrants

Turkey's coast guard launched a dramatic rescue operation Thursday to evacuate migrants stranded on rocks in the Aegean Sea.

The coast guard said in a statement that 51 migrants attempted to illegally cross to Greece on a rubber dinghy from the western province of Izmir. Authorities intervened after receiving an emergency call at 01:12 local time.

Die Welt: Greece letting immigrants through to Germany deliberately

German newspaper Die Welt published an article revealing that the northern borders of Greece and Bulgaria are not being guarded sufficiently, leading to more immigrants passing through Greece to Germany and central Europe via the Balkan route. The piece goes so far as to accuse the Greek government of providing false figures to conceal its failure and tactics.

420 migrants caught off Aegean in one week: Turkish Interior Ministry

A total of 420 illegal migrants were apprehended off Turkey's Aegean coast over the past week, Turkish Interior Ministry stated on Aug. 19. Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 18, Turkish Coast Guards intercepted 420 migrants in nine separate incidents off the Aegean Sea, the ministry said in a statement. It said one migrant smuggler was also detained during the operations.

Seven migrants killed after boat capsizes off Turkey's Aegean coast

Seven were killed after a migrant boat sank off Turkey's Aegean coast on July 27 evening, the Turkish Coast Guard confirmed on July 28.      

Two women and five children were killed when the boat carrying 18 people capsized at around 9 p.m. near the Ceşme district of the Aegean province of İzmir. The boat was heading to the Greek islands.      

Turkish ship rescues 466 migrants from boat about to sink off Libya coast

A Turkish container ship has rescued a total of 466 migrants from an old boat which was about to sink off the Libyan coast, Doğan News Agency reported on May 30.

The Roseline A spotted migrants jam-packed on a boat off the Libyan coast while it was heading toward Tunisia.

The Turkish crew immediately embarked 466 migrants, including women and children, on the ship.
