Despite rain, about 2,000 people gathered on Friday for the annual commemoration of the victims of the camp at Jasenovac, site of an infamous World War II concentration camp run by the wartime Croatian fascist Ustase regime.

But why did the boycotts start in 2016 - why exactly that year? Did it maybe coincide with the Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ, taking power in Croatia?

The archives in question will be opened on March 2, 2020.

The Serbian National Council, which represents Croatia's Serb minority, and the Youth Initiative for Human Rights NGO organised a trip to the former Stara Gradiska and Jasenovac camps on Sunday on the anniversary of the execution of Nada Dimic, a member of the anti-Ustasa resistance movement in WWII.

"That society never gets round to asking itself: 'And what did I do so that it won't be the way it is for me, and am I at all to blame for what I went through, for what happened?' That kind of facing up to it, unfortunately, did not happen," said Pupovac, who is a representative of Serbs in Croatia, an MP, and the leader of the SDSS.

These recordings have been discovered recently in an archive in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dr. Gideon Greif, an Israeli Holocaust historian who recently authored a study about Jasenovac, and was decorated by the president on Serbia's Statehood Day, revealed this.

Money fines of up to EUR 4,000 euros are envisaged for those breaking the law - up to EUR 10,000 for repeat offenders.

The Austrian Ministry of the Interior made an updated list of forbidden Islamist and nationalist symbols.

The Science and Education Ministry told BIRN on Wednesday that it will recommend that Croatian schools organise visits to the Jasenovac Memorial Site as part of pupils' civic education studies from the start of the next school year.

"Therefore schools, if they decide [to do] that activity, can put [it] in their school curriculum," the ministry said.
