High-flying tech giants not immune to turbulent times

Tech giants that saw good times during the pandemic are dealing with a "hangover" compounded by inflation and the war in Ukraine, analysts have said after earnings released this week.

Amazon, Apple, Meta and Google-parent Alphabet released figures for the first quarter of this year that showed they are not impervious to turbulence roiling global markets.

Lamb meat prices cause controversy

Meat product prices have stirred a controversy between the heads of the associations of breeders and butchers.

Reacting to reports saying that meat prices could be hiked 24 percent in the upcoming days, Nihat Çelik, the head of the sheep and goat breeders' association TÜDKİYEB, accused butchers and brokers of unfair pricing, labeling them as "the meat lobby."

Samsung forecasts Q1 operating profit up 50.3% year-on-year

Samsung Electronics expects operating profits for the first quarter to rise 50.3 percent, the South Korean tech giant said in a statement yesterday, despite global supply chain woes.

The world's biggest smartphone maker forecast 2022 first-quarter operating profits of about 14.1 trillion won ($11.6 billion), up from 9.4 trillion won in the same quarter last year.

CSO appoints first female manager

A woman has been appointed for the very first time as the manager of the Turkish Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) since the institution's establishment in 1826.

Flute artist Sibel Ayhan Bayer will serve in the CSO's top post for a year.

"We have many female artists in the orchestra, and I think women can also succeed in management," Bayer told Demirören News Agency.

Retailers see decline in turnovers

Retailers in Turkey made a rather weak start into 2022 as their businesses declined in January more than usual.

Turnovers of retailers fell by 20 percent in the first month of this year compared with December 2021, according to a survey the United Brands' Association (BMD) conducted among member companies.
