Turkey fines WhatsApp $235,000 over data breach

Turkey on Sept. 3 joined a host of other countries in fining Facebook's ubiquitous WhatsApp messaging service for failing to sufficiently protect user data.

The 1,950,000-lira ($235,000, 200,000-euro) penalty was imposed after months of confusion over whether WhatsApp had introduced its controversial new data-sharing rules in Turkey.

Facebook under Fire across EU for Users Privacy Violations

The social network conglomerate Facebook faced another restrictive measure from the EU, Reuters reported. Facebook and other tech giants found themselves under cross-fire after the top EU court backed national agencies in their intentions to pursue the companies even when they are not their lead regulators. The court's decision opens the gate for series of potential new sanctions.

Record workload for Information Commissioner in 2020

Ljubljana – The Office of the Information Commissioner received a record number of applications, complaints and queries last year, according to the annual report submitted to the National Assembly.

A total of 565 complaints were received, and the number of requests for opinion rose by almost a third due to high demand for information about spending on public health measures.
