International reactions to the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen

Turkey's foreign minister on Oct. 10 criticized those who caused a humanitarian crisis in Yemen for condemning Turkey's operation in northern Syria, referring to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pledged on Aug. 13 Tehran's continued support for Yemen's Houthi movement and called for dialogue among Yemenis to safeguard the war-shattered nation's territorial integrity.

The collapse of U.N. efforts to organize peace talks between the Yemeni government and rebels is likely to lead to an escalation in the country's war, analysts say.

President Emmanuel Macron has defended French weapons sales to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, also saying that he was concerned by the humanitarian situation and would host a conference on the issue before the summer.

A Saudi-led military coalition announced $1.5 billion in new humanitarian aid for Yemen on Jan. 22, after the United Nations made what it called a record appeal for assistance for the war-ravaged country.

Yemen, who has been subjected to a Saudi Arabian blockade since Monday, faces the worst famine in recent decades, which can take millions of victims, warned UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lukok, quoted by the France press.

More than 5,000 civilians have been killed in Yemen since March 2015, including 1,184 children, the U.N. human rights office said on Sept. 5, renewing its calls for an international probe into the conflict.

At least 35 civilians have died as a result of a bombing in the Yemeni capital of Sana, carried out by Saudi-Arabia-led regional coalition aircrafts, TASS reports, citing information from the Al Mayadeen TV channel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and his successors in her first visit to the kingdom in seven years, saying she pressed them on women's rights, the war in Yemen and other sensitive issues, as reported by the Associated Press on May 1. 

The UN Security Council will meet on Friday at 11:30 am (1530 GMT) to discuss the US missile strikes on Syria, US diplomats said, reported AFP.

Russia demanded an emergency meeting after angrily denouncing the military action as an "aggression against a sovereign state."
