Russia set to finish the Turkish Akkuyu nuclear plant licensing by year-end

Russia hopes to finalize all necessary licenses and permits for Akkuyu, Turkey’s first nuclear plant, by the end of the year, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak has said.

Contracting parties are working to obtain the last of the licenses for Akkuyu, Novak told state-run Anadolu Agency over the Aug. 19-20 weekend.

U.S. President Donald Trump grudgingly signed into law new sanctions against Russia on Aug. 2, a move Moscow said amounted to a full-scale trade war and an end to hopes for better ties with the Trump administration.

Congress overwhelmingly approved the legislation last week, passing a measure that conflicts with the Republican president's desire to improve relations with Moscow.

Germany calls for retaliation against 'illegal' US sanctions on Russia

New penalties against Moscow proposed by US lawmakers violate international law and officials in Brussels should consider countermeasures, the German economy minister said on Monday.

"We consider this as being against international law, plain and simple," Brigitte Zypries told the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain.
