Israel strikes south Syria and Damascus: ministry, state media

Israeli air strikes hit southern Syria, the Syrian defence ministry said, with state media reporting attacks near the capital Damascus.

"At approximately 23:05 (20:05 GMT) today, the Israeli enemy carried out air strikes from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points in the southern region," the defence ministry said in a statement, reporting no casualties.

In a high-stakes move, the United States conducted a strike on pro-Iranian targets in Syria, resulting in the reported death of nine individuals associated with Iran-backed groups in the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a non-governmental organization, confirmed the casualties, emphasizing that the strike targeted sites utilized by pro-Iranian factions.

This was stated today by the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
He told the Security Council that, with the violence in the Syrian conflict, the Syrian people now face the "frightening prospect of a potential wider escalation" following Hamas' attacks on Israel on October 7 and Israeli military retaliation.
