46 people died because of the record cold in Europe. A number of European cities have temporary shelters for homeless people.
They call it the "Beast of the East" - the cold front that covered almost the whole of Europe. In the UK today was the coldest day of nearly 30 years. Cold and snow stunned the kingdom, hundreds of schools were closed.

Geneva Аirport Closed by Icy 'Beast from the East'

The airport in the Swiss city of Geneva closed on Thursday due to bitterly cold weather that has hit many parts of Europe this week with snow and icy winds, causing travel chaos.

"Because of the prevailing weather conditions, Genève Aéroport is currently closed to air traffic until further notice," the airport said on its website, quoted by Reuters. 

Travel Chaos in France as Snow Blankets Paris

Snowfall has caused huge traffic jams and hampered train services in the Paris region as the French capital experiences its first real dose of wintry weather this season.

The Meteo France weather service put the greater Paris region on alert for snow and black ice on roads, among 28 departments it expected to be on alert across the country until late on Wednesday.

Thousands of households are without electricity because of the storm Elinor, which has reached the UK. The most severely affected are Northern Ireland, the northern regions of England and the southwest coast of Scotland. In some places the speed of the winds reaches 130 km / h. Streets in several Northern Ireland villages are flooded, there are closed roads because of fallen trees.
