Ghibli theme park prepares for visitors

Japan crowdfund for forest that inspired film

A Japanese city is launching a crowdfunding campaign to help preserve a special spot of woodland: The forest that inspired the animator of beloved movie "My Neighbour Totoro."

The city of Tokorozawa outside Tokyo plans to buy the 3.5-hectare "Totoro Forest" for 2.6 billion yen ($19 million), with crowdfunding covering just a small portion of that, a city official told AFP.

New York film critics name ’Drive My Car’ best film of 2021

The New York Film Critics Circle on Dec. 3 named "Drive My Car," Ryusuke Hamaguchi's intimate three-hour epic and Haruki Murakami's short story adaptation, the best film of the year.

Hamaguchi's film, about a widowed actor played by Hidetoshi Nishijima, has been widely hailed since its debut earlier in the year at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won for best screenplay.

Classic Japanese Cinema | Athens | February 13-15

In collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Japan in Greece, the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation is hosting a film festival dedicated to Yasujiro Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, two masters of classic Japanese cinema, on February 13-15. The screenings include two internationally acclaimed movies by each director at the Cacoyannis Foundation.

The 76th edition of the Venice International Film Festival begins.
The 76th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia, and will take place at Venice Lido from August 28th to September 7th, 2019. The Festival is officially recognised by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Association).
