The Appeals Court delivered its verdict after the Montenegrin Supreme Court last June ordered a second retrial for Martinovic.

"The decision has been made and at the beginning of next week, [the case] will be returned to the lower court," the Supreme Court told daily newspaper Vijesti.

Investigative Journalist Sentenced in Montenegro Expects ‘Fair’ Retrial
A new trial in Montenegro against the investigative journalist Jovo Martinovic for drug trafficking started on Thursday before the Higher Court in Podgorica.
The court jailed him for 18 months in January 2019 but the Appeal Court overturned the verdict in October as a result of which a retrial was ordered.
Montenegro Jails Crime Reporter for Drug Trafficking
The Higher Court in Podgorica on Tuesday sentenced investigative journalist Jovo Martinovic to one and a half years in prison for alleged drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organisation.
Martinovic told BIRN that the verdict was politically motivated and not based on facts.
Journalist Martinovic released in Montenegro pending trial
A Montenegro court on Tuesday night released independent journalist Jovo Martinovic, pending the outcome of his trial.
The journalist told this to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Wednesday, the organization reported.
Montenegro Releases Crime Reporter Martinovic
After almost year and a half in detention on drug smuggling charges, Montenegro has freed crime reporter Jovo Martinovic, his family confirmed to BIRN on Thursday.
Martinovic was released on Wednesday to face his ongoing trial before a court in Podgorica on drug-related charges that he has several times denied.

Crime Reporter's Trial Opens in Montenegro
The trial in Montenegro of Jovo Martinovic, an investigative journalist who has exposed crime networks, war criminals and robberies, opened on Thursday in a Podgorica court.
Martinovic has been charged with aiding and belonging to a drugs-trafficking gang. He has pleaded not guilty .
