WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in jail by a London court on May 1 for skipping bail to enter the Ecuadorean embassy where he was holed up for almost seven years until police dragged him out last month.

Ecuadoran President Lenin Moreno on April 14 defended his decision to overturn Julian Assange's asylum status, claiming in an interview with the Guardian newspaper that the WikiLeaks founder had tried to set up a "center for spying" in Ecuador's London embassy.

Julian Assange would cooperate with Swedish authorities if they reopen a rape case against him but will continue to resist any bid to extradite him to the United States, his lawyer said on April 14.

WikiLeaks creator was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, police said. 47-year-old Julian Assange has been detained by London City Police officers at the Ecuadorian Embassy on an order issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court on June 29, 2012 for failing to appear in court.

"Julian Assange, 47, has today, Thursday 11 April, been arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador," police said.

RT is reporting that Assange was arrested by UK police immediately after leaving the embassy.

Ecuador's president decided to abolish the previously approved asylum, which for six years protected the founder of the whistleblowing website from arrest.
