Strong winds uproot large pine tree in Kalamata square but noone injured

Strong winds uprooted one of the largest and oldest pine trees in the city of Kalamata, in the Peloponnese, late on Sunday but no one was injured.

The tree had stood in one of the city's busiest squares, just a few meters from the municipal Christmas tree at the port, though no one had been nearby when it fell.

Greek archaeologists have brought to light an extensive portion of the ancient theatre of Thouria, near the port town of Kalamata in the Peloponnese, the Greek Ministry of Culture said on Thursday.
The excavation at the site of ancient Thouria unearthed the entire perimeter of the orchestra pit in the theater, the diameter of which is 16.30m.

Greek archaeologists have unearthed a major part of the ancient theater of Thouria at the outskirts of Kalamata city in southern Greece, the country's Culture Ministry announced on Thursday.

The first remains of the theater of the ancient city, which dates back to the 4th century BC, came to light during excavations in the summer of 2016.

Man arrested in Messinia for peddling child pornography

A 65-year-old man appeared before a prosecutor in Kalamata, southern Greece, Tuesday on charges of peddling child pornography over the internet.

The suspect was tracked down to his home in Messinia by the police cybercrime unit which was working on information received from a US nonprofit organization, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Kalamata is gearing up to hold its annual dance festival for the 23rd year in a row. This year dance groups from South Africa, Italy, Israel, Sweden, the Netherlands and Spain will be performing at the festival for the first time, making their Greek debut. The festival also features four Greek dance acts who have become a permanent fixture of the festival as the years have progressed.
