Greece is a "state of law with established democratic institutions" and it "would be dangerous to ignore the achievements of the last 50 years," President Katerina Sakellaropoulou has told the final day of the "50 Years of the Metapolitefsi" conference taking place in Athens.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou has expressed her shock at the death of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

"Shocked by the death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent human rights activist dedicated to the fight for freedom and democracy," Sakellaropoulou said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, President of the Parliament Konstantinos Tasoulas and ministers toured the Bank of Greece's vault which was recently upgraded with new security systems, as guests of its governor, Yannis Stournaras. The vault stores 71 of the 151 tons of Greece's gold.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday referred to the US State Department's approval of the sale of up to 40 advanced F-35 fighter jets to Greece, as well as the accompanying letter from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, saying that these developments "confirm the strategic depth of relations between the US and Greece."

A three-day conference commemorating the 50th anniversary since the restoration of Greek democracy, a period known as the Metapolitefsi, is scheduled to take place from February 29 to March 2 at the National Gallery in Athens.
