Simona Halep eases into the eighths in Madrid (WTA)

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number three, qualified without emotions in the eighth finals of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Madrid, endowed with total prizes of 2,549,105 euros, on Sunday, after defeating the Chinese Saisai Zheng, with 6-0, 6-4. Halep (29, 3 WTA) won in one hour and 19 minutes. The Romanian tennis player secured a 34,048 euros cheque and 120 WTA points.

Romanian tennis player Patricia Maria Tig won the July 2019 shot of the month, in a poll on the WTA website. Tig, who returned in the limelight after winning the title at Liqui Moly Open Karlsruhe and playing the final in Bucharest, gathered the most votes for a cross shot in the semifinal at the BRD Bucharest Open against German Laura Siegemund, at score 6-2, 2-1.

Romania's Halep - July 2019 player of the month

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep was voted the July player of the month, in a poll on the WTA website, after winning the 2019 Wimbledon Open women's singles trophy. Halep topped the monthly poll, surpassing US Serena Williams, the player she defeated in the Wimbledon final, as well as Anastasija Sevastova and Jil Teichmann.

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number one, on Sunday forfeited her first-round singles match at the 8,285,274-USD WTA China Open 2018 tournament in Beijing after her opponent Ons Jabeur of Tunisia won the first set 6-1.

Plagued by her back pains of late, Halep, 27, forfeited after 32 minutes.

Romania's Halep advances to Cincinnati Masters women's singles final

 Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number one, advanced to the women's singles final at the 2,874,299-USD Western & Southern Open tournament in Cincinnati (Ohio), after defeating Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka 6 -3 6-4 in Friday's semis.

Halep, 26, had a consistent play and prevailed in an hour and 16 minutes over 20-year-old Sabalenka, world number 34.

Greek tennis hope off to promising US Open start

Sakkari advances to second round of US Open

Greece's Maria Sakkari beat 24th-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the United States Open, in New York, on Monday.

Sakkari, No.98, will face Australia's Arina Rodinova, who prevailed over Dutchwoman Richel Hogenkamp, for a place in the third round.

Sakkari, now 22, made her Grand Slam debut at the 2015 US Open.
