Tourists wade through neck-deep water to board beach ferry in Crete

Tourists waded through neck-deep water while holding their bags aloft to board the ferry to Kissamos from Balos beach in Crete, despite a law passed in June that ordered a floating platform to be erected at the popular but remote bathing spot.

Local media report the platform is expected to be installed next week.

Search and rescue operation underway for overboard ferry passenger

A search and rescue operation got underway southeast of Hydra to find a ferry passenger who fell into the sea in unclear circumstances.

The coast guard operation is focused on an area 18 nautical miles southeast of the island.

A fellow passenger on the "Kissamos," which was en route from Hania in Crete to Piraeus, raised the alert.

Big seaplane plans for Crete

Greek Water Airports announced on Wednesday it has applied for the creation of a water aerodrome at Agia Galini in the prefecture of Rethymno in southern Crete. 

It also said that the Port Fund of Hania has submitted an application for the creation of a water aerodrome at the port of Kissamos, selecting Greek Water Airports as the contractor. 

70 migrants detained off Greek island of Crete

Authorities on Greece's island of Crete say 70 migrants have been removed from a yacht and detained after entering Greek waters.

The migrants, including 20 children, were being taken Tuesday in three coast guard vessels to the port of Kissamos, on the western part of the island, officials from the Merchant Marine Ministry said.
